Meet Mrs. Martin

Hello!  I'd like to tell you a little about myself.
I grew up in Bon Aqua, Tennessee.  I attended a K-8th school, East Hickman Elementary. I am married to Greg Martin and I have a son, James Martin.  I also have a pet cat, Luna (Lovegood) Martin.
I graduated from Hickman County High School.  I attended college at Middle Tennessee State University.  I got a degree in Elementary Education 1-8th;  I got my Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction.
When I first entered college I majored in Journalism.  I wanted to be a sports writer.  However, a mission trip, where I worked with children, made me rethink my future. I followed my heart;  I made the major change, and I have never looked back!
While studying educational theory and practices, I developed an admiration and respect for Maria Montessori.  In my classroom I keep in mind her 6 principles: Independence, Observation, Following, Correction (with practicality), Environment,  and Absorbent Mind.  In my classroom one can see the "6 Freedoms" that I use from Workshop Way that exemplify the Montessori Theory.
I also admire Dr.Carol Dweck who coined the term, Growth Mindset and Fixed Mindset.  She said, "when students believe they can get smarter, they understand that effort makes them stronger.  Therefore they put in extra time and effort, and that leads to higher achievement." (Mindset works)
I have been teaching for 30 years.  I've taught at Murfreesboro Montessori School, Homer Pittard Campus School (Graduate Teaching Assistant), David Youree Elementary and at present, Rocky Fork Elementary!
In my free time I enjoy watching sports.  I love the Tennessee Volunteers and the Green Bay Packers.  I love to read, go to the movies, travel, and bake.
I feel so blessed to be a teacher!  I will always do my best to help my Marvels be the best they can be!
